Bovine pregnancy testing

Accurate pregnancy diagnosis is essential for effective herd reproductive management. At Compass Veterinary Services, our team of ACV certified vets conducts precise pregnancy diagnoses through either manual rectal palpation or a rectal ultrasound probe.

Ultrasound pregnancy testing is typically carried out between 5 and 16 weeks, providing accurate estimates of the pregnancy stage during this period. It’s important to note that both manual and ultrasound-guided pregnancy testing become less accurate in late gestation.

For optimal accuracy in staging pregnancy, testing should ideally take place between the 5-to-16-week stage. After 6 weeks of gestation, the accuracy of diagnosing pregnant versus non-pregnant reaches 100% for both manual palpation and ultrasound.

Herd results can be thoroughly analysed and discussed either on the farm or at our clinic. Once we’ve assessed the goals and herd results, we tailor specific programs to meet the unique needs of each farm.
