Bull Fertility Testing
Bull Breeding Vet Soundness Exams
We advocate for an annual Bull Breeding Soundness examination for all bulls on your property, with particular emphasis on new or young bulls and those over 5 years old. It’s not uncommon for a bull to exhibit strong fertility one year and experience a decline the next.
The Bull Breeding Soundness exam consists of two fundamental components. Initially, a comprehensive health and physical assessment for mating is conducted, focusing on leg and joint conformation, body condition, and the structure of both internal and external genitalia. The second phase involves evaluating semen quantity and quality, along with an examination of sperm morphology (the structure of the sperm).

Bull Examination and Vaccinations
The examination provides assurance that, at the time of the assessment, the bull was deemed either fertile or sub-fertile. If a bull is found to be sub-fertile, additional testing may be necessary, or it may be deemed unfit for normal mating function, requiring potential replacement.
Additionally, during the same examination, other services such as vaccination and Pestivirus testing can be carried out. We recommend vaccination of all bulls for Leptospirosis, Vibriosis, and Pestivirus (BVDV), coupled with testing to ensure they are not Persistently Infected (PI) with Pestivirus. Trust Compass Veterinary Services to uphold the fertility and health of your bull population through comprehensive testing and preventative measures using the latest equipment and techniques.
